Glendale Guesthouse is a very beautiful and extremely spacious Victorian built town house, centrally located in Penrith. Constructed from traditional Cumbrian Red Sandstone, built sometime in the mid 1800’s. The plot on which number four (Glendale) would be built, at that time stood in the wooded grounds of the ‘Wordsworth Buildings’ and close to the Public Baths and ‘Wash Houses’ located on ‘Hunters Lane’. The house was understood to have originally been built for the ‘Edington Family’ with Daniel Charles Edington, born in 1866 in Edinburgh, trained as a Doctor. He was a prominent member of the local community, overseeing gruesome autopsies which were widely reported in the newspapers of the time. The Doctor shared his home at 4 Portland Place, with his wife Frances and son, who’s birth at the house was announced in the Scotsman in 1899 – the very first owner/occupants of this gorgeous Victorian house.
Our delightful Victorian property still retains many of its original features of the time; with soaring ceilings & large boxed bay windows, delivering tranquil views both to the rear, over the delightful & peaceful Church Grounds of Christ Church and to the front over the beautifully maintained Penrith Coronation Gardens. The house has the most wonderful wide, solid wood, carved staircase, which because of the fantastic workmanship and quality still serves the house perfectly to this very day. We have ceiling roses, picture rails, original cornices in nearly every room and the most handsome fireplace in the dining room; and just recently with the renovation and addition of our new room eight, we discovered a very beautiful and original inset fire surround (which we have retained in the room as a gorgeous feature) all these features make our home a truly lovely place to stay.
Glendale has been run as a guesthouse for many decades and has experienced a variety of owner operators over its life-time. In June of 2001, we became the very proud owner/operators of Glendale Guesthouse and this became our very wonderful family home and business and we became its very happy custodians. Since this time, we have strived to undertake a massive variety of changes to enhance the wonderful and original character of this delightful property; we work tirelessly to give our beautiful, old property a new but in-keeping update. We are a small family run business and we pride ourselves on the high and exacting standards we deliver to all our guests. Our family team consists of Paul & Ann and our son Benjamin; the three of us warmly welcome our guests to stay with us in our delightful family run guesthouse in Penrith and enjoy the experience our gorgeous home delivers.
