Glendale Guest House is a very beautiful and extremely spacious Victorian built town house, centrally located in Penrith. Constructed from traditional Cumbria Red Sandstone, built sometime mid to late 1800’s. The plot on which number four (Glendale) would be built, at that time stood in the wooded grounds of the ‘Wordsworth Buildings’ and close to the Public Baths and ‘Wash Houses’ located on ‘Hunters Lane’. The house was understood to have originally been built for the ‘Eddington Family’ with Daniel Charles Eddington, born in 1866 in Edinburgh, trained as a Doctor. He was a prominent member of the local community, overseeing gruesome autopsies which were widely reported in the newspapers of the time. The Doctor shared his home at 4 Portland Place, with his wife Frances and son, who’s birth at the house was announced in the Scotsman in 1899.
Our delightful Victorian property still retains many of its original features of the time; with soaring ceilings & large boxed bay windows, delivering tranquil views both to the rear, over the delightful & peaceful Church Grounds of Christ Church and to the front over the beautifully maintained Penrith Coronation Gardens. The house has the most wonderful wide, sweeping, solid wood, carved staircase; which because of the fantastic workmanship and quality still serves the house perfectly to this very day. We have ceiling roses, picture rails & original cornices in nearly every room along with the most handsome fireplace in the dining room. Through more recent renovation we discovered a very beautiful and original inset fire surround on one of our delightful single rooms, which we have retained. All these gorgeous features make our home a truly lovely place to stay.
